The Jewel

The Jewel
by Amy Ewing
Series:
The Lone City #1
Publication Date:
 02 October 2014
by HarperTeen

The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty––because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence . . . and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.

Is it just me or does the synopsis of The Jewel sound like a darker, high fantasy version of The Selection by Kiera Cass? Nonetheless, I’m really looking forward to reading this especially since it sounds so messed up. You know, my “the more screwed up the fictional world, the better to explore it” theory.

Anyway, I’ve been on a streak of featuring YA fantasy novels in my WoW posts for the past 5 weeks (Midnight Thief by Livia Blackburne, Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas, The Young Elites by Marie Lu, The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson and Snow Like Ashes by Sarah Raasch). This will (sadly) be the end of that streak but whoa, six weeks of featured YA fantasy novels. That really shows how many of them are being released this year! *goes to a corner to hop on the spot and squeal*

What book are you waiting on this week?
